Recording with GWN TV

Many IPTV players can record live television when the device and storage setup support it. This guide explains the basic recording process, what is required, and what to check if a recording does not work as expected.

Important: Recording availability depends on the player you are using, the device, available storage, and the stream itself. A channel playing normally does not always guarantee that a recording will complete successfully.

Before You Record

Before starting a recording, make sure:

How to Start a Recording

  1. Open your IPTV player.
  2. Go to Live TV or the equivalent live-channel section.
  3. Open the channel you want to record.
  4. Open the playback controls or channel options.
  5. Select Record or the recording icon.
  6. If the player asks you to choose a recording location, select the storage location you want to use.
  7. Confirm the recording if prompted.

Once recording begins, avoid closing the player or disconnecting the device from the network unless you are certain your player supports background recording.

How Long Should You Test a Recording?

For a quick test, record at least 5 minutes of a live channel.

After the test recording:

  1. Stop the recording normally.
  2. Wait 10 seconds to allow the recording file to finish writing.
  3. Open the recording.
  4. Check the beginning, middle, and end of the recording.
  5. Confirm that both audio and video are present.

Where Recordings Are Stored

The recording location depends on your player configuration and device.

Recordings may be stored:

If you use network storage, make sure the device can still reach that storage location before beginning a recording.

Recording to Network Storage

If your player is configured to save recordings to network storage:

  1. Make sure the storage computer or server is powered on.
  2. Make sure the streaming device is connected to the same local network, unless your storage setup specifically supports remote access.
  3. Confirm that the player can browse or access the recording folder.
  4. Start with a short 5-minute test recording.
  5. Play the recording back before relying on the setup for a longer program.

Do not assume network recording is working just because the folder appears in the player. Always make a short test recording and play it back first.

Recording Uses a Connection

A recording may use one of the simultaneous connections available on your account.

For example, if your plan includes two connections, recording one channel while watching another may use both connections.

If all available connections are already in use, a recording may fail to start or another stream may stop working.

Recording Stops Early

If a recording stops before the program is finished:

  1. Check whether the live channel was still playing at the time the recording stopped.
  2. Check whether the device lost its internet connection.
  3. Check whether the recording destination ran out of storage space.
  4. If using network storage, confirm the storage device remained online.
  5. Check whether another device started using an additional GWN TV connection.
  6. Try another 5-minute test recording on a different channel.

Recording Will Not Start

If you select Record and nothing happens:

  1. Confirm the channel is currently playing.
  2. Close the player completely.
  3. Wait 10 seconds.
  4. Reopen the player and try again.
  5. Check that the recording destination is available.
  6. Check that there is enough free storage space.
  7. Check whether all connections on your account are already in use.
  8. If needed, restart the streaming device. If unplugging it, leave it unplugged for at least 30 seconds before reconnecting it.

Recording Has Video but No Audio

If a recording has picture but no sound:

  1. Check whether the original live channel had sound while recording.
  2. Play another recording if you have one.
  3. Try a short recording from a different channel.
  4. Close and reopen the player, then test again.

If the issue only occurs on one channel, include the channel name when contacting support.

Recording Has Audio but No Video

If you can hear the recording but the picture is missing:

  1. Confirm the live channel had a normal picture when the recording started.
  2. Try another recording from a different channel.
  3. Close the player completely and wait 10 seconds before reopening it.
  4. Restart the streaming device if the problem continues.

Recording Buffers or Skips During Playback

If the recording plays but freezes, skips, or buffers:

  1. Check whether the original live stream was buffering during the recording.
  2. If the recording is stored on the network, confirm the network connection to the storage location is stable.
  3. Try playing the recording again after restarting the device.
  4. If the recording is on removable storage, confirm the storage device is connected properly.

A recording usually captures the stream as it was received. If the live stream was unstable during the recording, that instability may also appear in the saved recording.

If Network Recording Stops Working

If network recordings worked previously but suddenly stop:

  1. Confirm the storage server or computer is powered on.
  2. Confirm the streaming device still has network access.
  3. Confirm the recording folder is still available in the player.
  4. Close the player completely and wait 10 seconds before reopening it.
  5. If necessary, restart the streaming device by disconnecting power for at least 30 seconds.
  6. If your entire home network appears unstable, power-cycle the modem/router by unplugging it for at least 60 seconds, then wait until internet access is fully restored.
